Hot Buttered Scotch ALL PEDALS ARE TEMPORARILY OUT OF PRODUCTION UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!
Some have called it a "Dumble in a box."
For serious tone aficionados, it is a must-have overdrive pedal. People have asked us for years to do a Dumble voiced overdrive, and we've always declined, but some things are just destiny. The Hot Buttered Scotch was born.
The tones we were trying to most closely emulate are mellowed woody smooth tones, as well as the hotter “preamp boosted” singing overdrive tones produced by some of the legendary Dumble amps now considered by many to be the “Holy Grail” of guitar amplifiers. The HBS nails both personalities with equal deftness, depending on settings. Controls are simple; gain on the left, a “Hi-Cut” tone control in the center, and output volume on the right.
Setting the hi-cut control to noon yeilds a smooth break up and earthy, jazzier and blues tones. Moving the hi-cut fully counter clockwise, the tone brightens but also the full gain potential is realized. This is akin to using the preamp boost feature on the real amps. It’s brighter with a slight cut in the low end and a boost in gain. Dialing it clockwise mellows out the high end tone in a fashion similar to the hi-cut feature found in the overdrive channel of some Dumble amps.
In addition to the mellower tones and the slightly hotter boosted tones via the hi-cut, the HBS is capable of MUCH higher gain tones and compression than would be typically elicited from the real amps. At this point the HBS takes on a different personality of it’s own. It overdrives smoothly and gracefully but can output very high gains with a natural feeling compression.
Circuit is a jFET buffered input, parallel gain staged opamp driving soft overdriving circuitry and the tone cut circuit, finally feeding into a discrete jFET for further soft overdriving. Overall the circuit employs similar logic to that of the real amps. Soft overdriving done sublty across several stages to achieve a smoothness of overdrive without the abrupt and sharp clipping found in most pedal circuits. Those are great sounds and circuits too but the goal and process here is much different.
Component selection process for the HBS was stringent. Through endless geeking. Through time consuming sourcing and procuring of the right parts. Through dozens of listening and testing sessions and many other processes the HBS slowly took form. We have taken great pains to see to it that this circuit is expressed at it’s highest potential elevation.
We feel the efforts have been worth it. We love the HBS and feel it is one of the best pedals we have ever played much less had the pleasure of putting into the world.
